What Does It Mean To Be Psychic?

One of my first psychic teachers was Ramona Garcia, a popular psychic and very wise, spiritually gifted woman. Ramona taught me that although psychic knowing can feel magical, the psychic power of mind is not actually magic, but a tool to be used in a variety of everyday ways for beating stress; accessing wise knowing and solving problems. The wisdom of the psychic dimension can be an adjunct to therapy for self-care and for healing mental distress.

Actually, I was somewhat disappointed to learn that the way of the psychic is not usually dramatic and doesn’t necessarily involve information that is unknown to you. Intuition and psychic knowing can involve what you know as well as what you do not.  I’d hoped for some bells and whistles, but psychic/intuitive information can often be ordinary: a hunch that someone is about to call; a new view of an old problem, or a new meaning you wisely attribute to part of your life story.

I learned from Ramona that psychic intuition is often spontaneous. Psychic reception can be as simple as being impressed with the wisdom to change a negative thought into a positive, or intuitively sensing the correct action to take in a problematic situation. It can also be applied intentionally using the same techniques of stillness that are the key to reducing stress.(Soul Mothers’ Wisdom, 2015)

One of the most important applications of intuition for me has been in my work as a clinical social worker. When I use my mini-hunches and guide others to use the psychic wisdom that is their true birthright, sometimes it does feel like the room is filled with magic. My new book Other Realms, Other Ways: A Clinician’s Guide to the Magic of Psychotherapy will tell you more about utilizing psychic wisdom in therapy.
